Former Makerere University Guild President Lawrence Alionzi, widely known as “Dangote,” has officially joined the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and declared his intentions to run for Arua City Mayor in the upcoming elections.
Alionzi, who previously served as Makerere’s 88th Guild President on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, was on Monday formally welcomed into the NRM by the party’s Secretary General at the NRM Secretariat in Kampala. Shortly after, he picked nomination forms to run for mayor under the NRM banner.

Addressing journalists after picking the forms, Alionzi explained that his decision to join the ruling party was driven by a desire to play an active role in shaping the future of his community, rather than remain a passive observer in national affairs.
“There are three kinds of people in politics the spectators, the commentators, and the actors. I have chosen to be an actor,” Alionzi said. “The struggle is not against any individual or political group. The struggle is against poverty, ignorance, and illiteracy. And I believe I can make a better contribution through the mighty movement.”
He expressed gratitude to NUP for his past political journey but emphasized that his motivation was to serve more effectively through the NRM’s structures, which he believes provide a practical platform for local transformation.
“I left the opposition with a grateful heart. I harbor no bitterness or regrets,” he added.
Alionzi, a trained electrical engineer, highlighted the simplicity and efficiency of the NRM nomination process, praising the party for what he described as a “seamless and welcoming experience.”
