By The Electoral Commission (EC) has come out strongly to dispel claims circulating on social media and in sections of the press that a new political party called the People Power Front (PPF) has been officially registered in Uganda.
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on April 4, 2025, the Commission clarified that it has not registered or issued a certificate of registration to any political party or organization under that name.
“The Electoral Commission would like to inform the general public that as of 4th April 2025, it has not registered or issued a certificate of registration to any political party or organization called People Power Front or PPF,” the notice reads in part.
The statement follows a wave of online excitement and political chatter after a group of individuals held a press conference on April 3, announcing the formation and alleged full registration of People Power Front as a new political entity poised to challenge the status quo in the 2026 General Elections.
The group claimed to be inspired by grassroots mobilization efforts and framed themselves as the true custodians of the people’s voice, sparking speculation about links to various opposition movements, including those affiliated with the wider “People Power” slogan historically associated with the National Unity Platform (NUP) and its leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine.
However, the EC’s official response now casts doubt on the authenticity and legality of the PPF’s status and raises serious questions about whether the announcement was premature, misleading, or an outright fabrication.
The EC has not indicated whether it has received a pending application under the name People Power Front. As of now, no official party by that name is recognized in Uganda’s political party register.
