The Electoral Commission (EC) has sounded a warning to aspiring candidates for parish-level Special Interest Group (SIG) committees not to miss the two-day nomination window that opened today, Thursday, June 26, and closes tomorrow, Friday, June 27, 2025.
The exercise targets individuals interested in representing youth, older persons, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) at the parish level. According to the EC, this phase is part of the broader roadmap for SIG elections already underway.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kampala, EC spokesperson Mr. Julius Muchungizi stressed that no excuses will be entertained for missing the deadline.
“We do not want to hear people say they didn’t know or they were late,” Muchungizi said. “The nomination is for two days today and tomorrow. Please bear with us and take note.”
In a key clarification, the Commission announced that only those elected to village-level SIG committees are eligible to contest for the parish-level positions. This includes candidates for the Youth, Older Persons, and PWDs committees.
“It is only those that are members of the village committees that can pick nomination forms to contest as candidates for parish-level committee elections,” Muchungizi explained.
He further clarified that the village-level committees will form the electoral college that elects the parish-level leaders, reinforcing the bottom-up structure of the SIG electoral process.
“Village committees in a parish will constitute themselves into an electoral college,” he said. “They will elect, among themselves, the parish committee for each category.”
The EC also urged all participants and stakeholders to uphold peace and lawful conduct throughout the process. With campaigns and general elections for SIGs set to follow, Muchungizi warned against inflammatory language and misuse of digital platforms.

“Peace is the prerequisite for everything good that we want to see as a country,” he said. “Let us treat each other with respect and follow the Commission’s guidelines.”
The EC’s latest message comes as it intensifies efforts to boost civic awareness and enforce compliance in the SIG electoral cycle, which is seen as critical to inclusive governance and grassroots representation.
