Eddie Mutwe Tortured, Traumatized In Detention, Bobi Wine Claims After Prison Visit

National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, has raised serious allegations of torture against state security operatives following a visit to Masaka Main Prison on Tuesday, where he checked on his detained aide, Eddie Mutwe, and three other party members.

In an emotionally charged post on X (formerly Twitter), Kyagulanyi claimed that Eddie Mutwe real name Edward Ssebuufu was subjected to incommunicado detention and extreme physical abuse, including electrocution, waterboarding, beatings, and psychological torment, during his time in custody.

“Eddie Mutwe is alive that’s the only good news. He is in great pain,” Kyagulanyi wrote. “He was brutalised in the most barbaric manner… They squeezed his private parts and flogged him four times a day.”

According to Kyagulanyi, Mutwe narrated that he was kept in a dark basement facility, handcuffed and shackled, receiving only one meal a day. He was allegedly forced to sit in dirty, blood-stained water and denied drinking water. At one point, Kyagulanyi claimed, Mutwe was forced at gunpoint to wear a T-shirt bearing President Yoweri Museveni’s image and to swear allegiance to the president and his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, while being filmed.

Mutwe also reportedly told Kyagulanyi that he was injected with unknown substances and subjected to strenuous physical punishment, including forced frog jumps and press-ups. Despite visible signs of injury, Kyagulanyi said Mutwe has not received adequate medical care and now struggles to walk unaided.

The NUP leader further alleged that Gen. Muhoozi personally participated in the torture, mocking Mutwe and challenging him to a fight a claim that, if verified, would have far-reaching legal and political implications.

During the prison visit, Kyagulanyi was accompanied by Mutwe’s mother, wife, and infant child. Overcome with emotion, Mutwe reportedly broke down and was unable to recount the full extent of his ordeal.

“He says that he has difficulty finding sleep. Every time he closes his eyes, he sees these monsters approaching him,” Kyagulanyi stated.

The NUP has maintained that Mutwe and his co-accused Achileo Kivumbi, Mugumya Gaddafi, and Wakabi Grace were arbitrarily arrested and are being held on politically motivated charges.

Kyagulanyi demanded their immediate release and called for an independent medical evaluation and investigation into the alleged torture.

“These comrades committed no offence. They should not be in prison. Eddie should be in a hospital, receiving the treatment he urgently needs,” he said.

As of press time, there has been no official response from the Uganda Prisons Service or the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) regarding the torture allegations.
