Calvin David Echodu has officially been nominated to contest in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries for Soroti West Constituency, in a move that party insiders say signals renewed momentum for the ruling party in the opposition-leaning city.
One of his main contenders, Tony Omal Ebaat, withdrew from the race on Monday, citing the need to avoid internal division that could jeopardize the party’s chances in the 2026 general election.

“I want to thank my young brother, Honorable Ebaat, for being foresighted and working for the unity and success of NRM,” Echodu said after his nomination. “By stepping down and joining forces, we are positioning NRM to finally win the Soroti superweight competition.”
Soroti West is currently represented by Jonathan Ebwalu, an Independent MP. The constituency has previously proved elusive for NRM, with opposition and independent candidates dominating recent electoral contests.
Echodu pledged to rally grassroots support and energize the party base, especially the youth. “We want to excite young people about NRM and work with them to invigorate the party,” he said, adding that card identification and voter mobilization would be central to his campaign strategy.
He also acknowledged the support of local party leaders, including the Soroti NRM chairman, and called for collective effort ahead of the 2026 polls. “This unity is a turning point. For the first time, we are working together with a clear joint vision to deliver victory for NRM in Soroti City.”
The nomination of Echodu and the strategic withdrawal of Omal Ebaat now consolidate support behind a single NRM flagbearer—an effort party leaders hope will help break the pattern of electoral losses in the region.
