Addressing the media on Tuesday, EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama said the timelines mark the official close of the campaign period ahead of polling, warning that no political activity promoting candidates will be tolerated beyond the stipulated hours.
“All open-air campaigns must end at 6:00 p.m. Those on the radio and television can go on until midnight. After that, no programme in support of any candidate will be aired,” he said.
Justice Byabakama added that candidates and their supporters will not be permitted to move with mobile sound systems once the campaign period ends, noting that the restriction also applies to campaign agents.
“The conclusion of the campaign not only affects the candidates but also their agents. Agents are not supposed to campaign on behalf of their candidates,” he said.
He explained that the day following the end of the campaigns is legally designated as a rest day, intended to allow candidates and their campaign teams to make final logistical preparations for polling day.
While campaign activities are prohibited, the EC chairperson clarified that meetings for planning polling-day operations are permitted under the law, including the facilitation of polling agents.
“What is allowed are meetings of candidates or their agents strictly for purposes of planning for polling day. What is not allowed is the booking or harvesting of votes,” Justice Byabakama cautioned.
He further reminded political actors that no campaigning will be allowed on polling day and urged adherence to electoral laws to ensure a peaceful voting process.
