EC Adjusts Poll Roadmap, Campaigns Begin Sept 29

The Electoral Commission (EC) has revised key dates in the 2025 general election roadmap, moving both the start of presidential campaigns and the nomination period for Members of Parliament.

Unveiling the changes at the Commission’s new headquarters in Lweza-Lubowa, Makindye Ssabagabo, EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama announced that presidential campaigns will now begin on September 29, 2025, five days earlier than the initially scheduled October 4, 2025.

Byabakama said the shift was aimed at avoiding unnecessary tension among candidates and their supporters after nomination.
“When people are geared to go, they are raving to hit the campaign tracks. Holding them down for ten days was too much,” he explained.

The EC also adjusted the nomination schedule for Members of Parliament. Initially set for October 15–16, 2025, the exercise will now take place on October 22–23, 2025. The change was made following consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to avoid clashing with Uganda’s hosting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Mid-Term Review Conference, scheduled for the same mid-October dates.

Byabakama said the decisions were taken in the spirit of ensuring a smooth and credible electoral process.
“These adjustments are necessary to balance our national obligations while ensuring that candidates and voters have clarity in the electoral roadmap,” he noted.

The revisions come just days before the long-awaited presidential nominations, which will be the first major activity hosted at the Commission’s new premises.
