Dr. Kiyonga Eyes Bukonzo West Seat Again After Two Losses

Former Defense Minister Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga has been nominated to contest for the Bukonzo West parliamentary seat in Kasese District, marking his third consecutive attempt to reclaim the position he lost nearly a decade ago.

Dr. Kiyonga, a senior member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), previously represented Bukonzo West for several terms before being unseated by the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate Godfrey Katusabe in both the 2016 and 2021 general elections.

Speaking after his successful nomination on Wednesday, Dr. Kiyonga said his campaign will focus on improving household incomes and strengthening service delivery in key sectors such as education, health, and agriculture.

“We are going to focus on services, particularly education and health,” he said. “We are also going to focus on improving the agricultural sector because most of our people depend on farming.”

He highlighted coffee farming as the main economic activity in Bukonzo West, pledging to help farmers transition to higher-yielding varieties through government programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM).

“In the case of Kasese and particularly Bukonzo West, the main agricultural activity is coffee farming. We think our people should now change the type of coffee they have been planting and adopt more productive types,” he said.

Dr. Kiyonga expressed optimism that, by working closely with the NRM government, he can help revitalize the local economy and restore confidence among farmers who have faced challenges of low yields and market instability.

A veteran politician and medical doctor, Dr. Kiyonga has previously served in several senior cabinet positions, including Minister of Health, Minister for Cooperation, Minister of Internal Affairs, and later Minister of Defence. He was also Uganda’s Ambassador to China, where he represented the country between 2017 and 2022. His long political career and administrative experience make him one of the most seasoned figures in Kasese’s political landscape.
