According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango, Wayengera and his wife, Najabi Christine, were kidnapped while returning from a burial in Mbale. The couple was allegedly intercepted by men dressed in uniforms resembling those of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), who claimed they were escorting them to Mukono Police Station.
Instead, the suspects diverted them to Kyungu Road, where Wayengera was killed. His wife was later found dumped and injured in Jinja Misindye, Goma Division. She was rescued by locals and is currently undergoing treatment at a medical facility.
The police have recovered the vehicle involved in the incident a Toyota Fielder, registration number UBP 520A which was found abandoned in Jinja Misindye and is now parked at Mukono Police Station as part of the ongoing investigations.
SSP Onyango confirmed that statements have been recorded from multiple witnesses, and the victim’s body was transported to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examination.
The assailants remain at large. Police have urged the public to come forward with any information that could aid in tracking down the perpetrators.
Wayengera was also known for his work with Compassion Uganda, a Christian child development organization, further intensifying public interest in the case. Community members have expressed grief and demanded justice.
