Diamond Platnumz Deletes Posts Praising President Samia After Backlash

Tanzanian music star Diamond Platnumz has removed all Instagram posts praising President Samia Suluhu Hassan, following a wave of public criticism and threats from angry fans accusing him of siding with the ruling government over ordinary citizens.

The celebrated Bongo Flava artiste had posted a lengthy tribute just a day earlier, lauding President Suluhu as a wise and hardworking leader who had transformed sectors including education, health, agriculture, and infrastructure. He also pledged his personal support and that of his associates, assuring them of his vote ahead of the national elections.

Written in Swahili, Diamond’s message concluded with warm wishes for the president’s success, sentiments that many Tanzanians perceived as tone-deaf given widespread discontent over political issues and concerns about the electoral process.

Instead of praise, the post sparked anger online. Thousands of users flooded the comments section, accusing him of betraying ordinary citizens. Some threatened to boycott his music and even vandalize his Wasafi Studios if he continued supporting the president.

“You have chosen the side of power instead of the people,” one user wrote, reflecting the sentiments of many frustrated fans.

By Thursday night, all traces of the posts had disappeared from Diamond’s official Instagram page, signaling his retreat from the controversy. His previously enthusiastic public support for the ruling party has given way to caution and silence.

Unconfirmed social media reports suggest that Diamond, along with fellow musician Zuchu and their families, may have left the country amid the backlash.

Meanwhile, other pro-government celebrities, including Rayvanny, Zuchu, Harmonize, and Ali Kiba, who had previously posted tributes or attended pro-government events, have largely remained silent online. Their past posts remain visible, but they have not made any new statements, an apparent attempt to distance themselves from the controversy.
