Democratic Front to Cover Nomination Fees for Parliamentary Aspirants

The Democratic Front (DF), a political party led by Mathias Mpuuga, has announced that it will cover the nomination fees for all its parliamentary and local government candidates ahead of the 2026 general elections. This move aims to make political participation more accessible to ordinary Ugandans, especially those without substantial financial resources.

According to Mpuuga, the decision to redirect funds initially intended for a presidential campaign to support parliamentary and local government candidates underscores the party’s commitment to grassroots democracy. He emphasized that the current nomination fees, which can reach up to three million shillings, are prohibitive for many potential candidates. “An ordinary person getting three million, it takes a lot of hassle. And for standing for a position to be made available only for those who can afford millions is a danger to this country,” Mpuuga stated.

The DF’s initiative is part of a broader effort to democratize the political process and encourage a diverse range of individuals to participate in governance. By covering the nomination fees, the party seeks to eliminate financial barriers that often deter capable candidates from running for office.

As the 2026 elections approach, the DF’s approach may influence other political parties to reconsider their nomination fee structures, potentially leading to a more inclusive and representative political landscape.
