Road traffic crashes declined between December 22 and 28, 2025 compared to the same festive period last year, despite heavy traffic on major highways, the Traffic Police have said.

Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura said 154 drivers were arrested during the period for various offences, including speeding, reckless driving, drink-driving, and operating vehicles without valid licences.
Of the arrested drivers, 38 were cited for driving without a licence, 12 for driving under the influence of alcohol, and 42 for reckless driving, mainly unsafe overtaking and speeding. Another 42 were arrested for carrying excess passengers, while 13 cases of dangerous loading were recorded. Police also impounded seven abandoned vehicles.
Kananura said most crashes involved vulnerable road users, particularly motorcyclists and pedestrians, while motor vehicle crashes were largely caused by speeding, careless overtaking, and failure to maintain safe distances.
He said one of the deadliest incidents during the period occurred in the early hours of Saturday, December 27, when a crash along the Masaka–Mbarara Highway in Lwengo District claimed the lives of seven members of the same family.
The police credited the reduction in crashes to joint enforcement and public awareness campaigns conducted with the Ministry of Works and Transport, the Uganda Professional Drivers’ Network, and the media under the “Arrive Alive” campaign.
Kananura urged road users to continue observing traffic regulations as enforcement operations will remain in place into the New Year.
