Compensation for Kiteezi Garbage Slide Victims Underway — KCCA

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), under the coordination of the Office of the Prime Minister, has made significant strides in compensating and rehabilitating victims of last year’s Kiteezi garbage slide, which displaced more than 140 households.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the Uganda Media Center, KCCA Executive Director, Hajjati Sharifah Buzeki, confirmed that 18 properties belonging to households affected during the emergency evacuation phase have already been compensated.

The landslide, which occurred on August 10, 2024, forced the evacuation of 142 households in the Kiteezi area, causing massive property loss and displacement.

According to Buzeki, an approved valuation of UGX 2.14 billion was provided to KCCA on April 22, 2025, to compensate 34 additional households whose properties were completely submerged. “The process of compensating these families is now underway, and we are closely tracking its progress,” she said.

In addition, a structural integrity analysis was conducted for 70 flood-affected households. The report from this analysis was handed over to KCCA on July 30, 2025. “We are now awaiting the valuation costs from the Chief Government Evaluator, after which compensation for these households will also commence,” Buzeki explained.

The Executive Director also noted that eight undeveloped plots owned by affected persons have been identified, and the Chief Government Evaluator is currently undertaking their evaluation. “Once we receive the cost assessments, we will engage the Ministry of Finance to secure the necessary funds for compensation,” she added.

Buzeki emphasized KCCA’s commitment to ensuring that all affected families receive fair compensation and assistance as part of the government’s multi-agency response.

The garbage slide at Kiteezi, one of the worst such incidents in recent years, highlighted longstanding challenges around waste management and land use in Kampala and its suburbs. Authorities have since pledged to strengthen disaster preparedness and mitigation measures across the city
