The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has appointed Colonel Godfrey Mathias Abigaba as the new Commander of the Defence General Depot (DGD), succeeding Brigadier General Augustine Kyazze who is set to retire later this year.
The official handover ceremony took place at Magamaga Barracks in Mayuge District and was presided over by Brigadier General Godwin Karugaba, Joint Staff – Logistics. The event was attended by senior and junior officers from across UPDF units, including heads of departments and commandants of military institutions.

Brig Gen Karugaba commended Brig Gen Kyazze for his dedicated service and strong leadership during his three-year tenure at the helm of the strategic unit responsible for managing all logistics within the army.
“This is a critical UPDF unit that demands a disciplined and sober commander,” Brig Gen Karugaba said. “Brig Gen Kyazze has performed exceptionally well. We are grateful for his service and urge others in logistics to emulate his professionalism and work ethic.”
He also expressed confidence in the incoming commander, Col Abigaba, describing him as an experienced logistician and a recent graduate of the National Defence College – Uganda.
“You were not chosen by mistake. Use your training and experience to lead wisely. The Depot requires commitment and strategic thinking,” Brig Gen Karugaba advised.
In his farewell address, Brig Gen Kyazze expressed gratitude to the UPDF leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility to command the DGD. He attributed his success to discipline and the teamwork of personnel at Magamaga.
“I have served with pride and honour, and I thank the officers and men at this unit who supported me throughout,” he said.
Col Abigaba, in his acceptance speech, pledged to uphold the standards set by his predecessor and work diligently to advance the mission of the DGD.
“This appointment is a vote of confidence, and I will give it my all. I look forward to building on the solid foundation laid before me,” Col Abigaba said.

The event was attended by notable military leaders, including Col Chris Kyanku, Commandant of the College of Logistics and Engineering; and Col Katongole, Commandant of the School of Supply and Transport, among others.
Brig Gen Kyazze’s retirement later this year will mark the end of a distinguished military career spanning decades of service.
