CHAN 2025: Expect Traffic Changes as Uganda Prepares for Kickoff

As Uganda gears up to host the prestigious 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has unveiled an elaborate traffic plan aimed at ensuring the safety and efficient movement of teams, officials, and fans throughout the tournament.

The changes, which take effect during the championship period, will temporarily affect travel around Kampala, Entebbe, and key match venues, particularly on match days.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, Traffic Police Spokesperson SP Michael Kananura said the measures are intended to minimize traffic congestion, secure participating delegations, and create a smooth experience for visitors and citizens alike.

“This is a matter of national pride. As hosts of a major continental tournament, it is our responsibility to provide an environment of safety, ease, and order,” Kananura said.

Routes Under Management and Match-Day Diversions
Several critical roadways, including the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway, Northern Bypass, and Bwaise Interchange, will be under strict surveillance. Access roads to key CHAN venues such as Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, Wankulukuku Stadium, Kadiba Stadium in Mengo, and Kyambogo University Playground will see restricted access on match days, especially from midday onwards.

Additional routes that will be affected include:

  • Mulago Traffic Lights–Yusuf Lule Road
  • Bukoto Road–Kira Road Police Station
  • Kisasi Roundabout–Kalerwe Interchange
  • Busega–Kabusu–Natete Road
  • Makerere Hill Road–Balintuma–Nakulabye stretch
  • Kyambogo Junction–Ministry of Works–Jinja Road

Kananura warned that without VIP accreditation, vehicles will not be allowed into stadium premises. “Parking inside Mandela Stadium will be strictly limited to those with VIP stickers. All others must seek alternative arrangements,” he emphasized.

Truck Diversions and Restricted Zones
To ease pressure on Kampala’s road network, heavy trucks will be diverted at various points including Kalelwe, Mukono, and Gayaza. Light vehicles may also be redirected based on real-time match schedules.

Critical diversions include:

  • Trucks from Kalerwe Interchange to Gayaza–Kalagi–Mukono
  • Trucks at Mukono redirected through Kalagi to Gayaza
  • Vehicles at Naalya diverted via Kyaliwajjala–Ssonde–Seeta
  • Seeta traffic pushed toward Namugongo and Kyaliwajjala
  • Bweyogerere traffic rerouted to Kinawataka via Jokas Hotel

Further restrictions will apply to Kinawataka Road, where access to Kireka Trading Centre will be closed at Hared Petrol Station. The Kireka–Nasanga stretch will only be open to pedestrians.

Security, Enforcement and Public Cooperation
Kananura noted that lead vehicles will escort CHAN convoys, and Traffic Police will be deployed across all affected areas. Officers will manage roadblocks, reroute traffic, and assist the public as needed.

“Diversions will only be implemented when necessary, especially during ongoing games,” he said. “We call on all road users to remain calm, follow officer instructions, and plan their journeys in advance.”

He concluded with a call for national unity and cooperation:

“Let us work together to make this tournament a success. Uganda has a chance to shine, and every citizen plays a role in ensuring a safe, welcoming atmosphere for our guests.”

The tournament is expected to attract thousands of fans and officials from across the continent, making efficient road management a top priority for organizers.
