Uganda has leveraged the upcoming TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 to fast-track sports infrastructure development and open doors for future economic growth, officials announced during the tournament launch at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on Friday.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who presided over the event, said the tournament is not just about football but a catalyst for progress.
“Sports builds character and unites nations. CHAN will showcase Uganda to the world, attracting tourism and investment. Just like CHOGM transformed our infrastructure, CHAN has motivated us to act again,” Museveni said.

According to the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, Uganda has upgraded several facilities, including FUFA Kadiba, Muteesa II Stadium, and Kyambogo Stadium, ensuring long-term benefits for local sports.
“These developments will outlast CHAN and serve future generations. Government is committed to delivering a successful tournament,” she noted.
The Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC), Veronica Mueni Nduva, hailed the joint hosting by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda as a symbol of unity and a driver of socio-economic impact.
“Football creates opportunities beyond the pitch jobs, tourism, and trade will all benefit,” she said.
FUFA President Moses Magogo emphasized football’s role in economic growth.
“We want football to be seen as a socio-economic activity, not just a game. Hosting tournaments like CHAN brings revenue and international attention,” Magogo explained.
The CHAN 2024 tournament, sponsored by TotalEnergies, will run from August 2 to August 30, 2025, across three East African nations.
