In a dramatic twist at Kololo Independence Grounds, long-serving National Resistance Movement (NRM) Vice Chairperson for Eastern Region, Capt. Mike Mukula, on Wednesday abruptly pulled out of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) race, throwing his weight behind rival candidate Calvin Echodu.
The announcement, made just minutes before delegates went to the polls, sent ripples through the NRM conference hall. Mukula, who has held the position for over a decade, said his decision was guided by the need to promote party unity and to give space to “new energy” in the NRM’s leadership structure.

“I have consulted widely and reflected deeply. Today, I stand here to say I will not be seeking re-election as Vice Chairperson for Eastern Region. Instead, I endorse Calvin Echodu, a young and capable leader who I believe will take forward the NRM’s agenda in our region,” Mukula declared, drawing a mixture of shock and applause from delegates.
The move is expected to significantly reshape the contest, as Mukula had been one of the frontrunners, commanding loyalty across districts in the east. His endorsement of Echodu is likely to consolidate a large bloc of votes and tilt the balance against other contenders.
Echodu, visibly energized by the endorsement, thanked Mukula for what he described as a “selfless and historic gesture,” promising to carry forward his predecessor’s legacy while injecting new dynamism into the party’s structures.
“This is not just my race anymore. With Capt. Mukula’s blessing, I commit to working tirelessly to strengthen the NRM in the east and ensure that our people’s voices and aspirations are at the centre of the party’s programs,” Echodu said.
