Bushenyi District Council has resolved to rename the Bushenyi Main Stadium to Mary Karooro Stadium in honour of the late former Minister, author, and long-serving Bushenyi Woman MP, Mary Karooro Okurut.
The resolution, passed during a special council session on Thursday, was tabled by councillor Edward Mpabwa, who cited Karooro’s outstanding service to the district and the Ankole region.
Mpabwa said the late Karooro had played a pivotal role in promoting youth talent through sports, notably by supporting the Ankole Football Tournament, where she frequently sponsored teams, provided sports kits, and encouraged young athletes to pursue excellence.

“Her commitment to empowering the youth went beyond the political sphere—she invested in sports as a unifying and developmental tool for our community,” Mpabwa said.
The council also appealed to President Yoweri Museveni to upgrade the facility to modern standards as a lasting tribute to Karooro’s legacy, noting that such an investment would honour her passion for both youth development and community upliftment.
Karooro, who passed away on August 11, 2025, in Nairobi, was widely celebrated for her decades of public service. She served as Minister of Information and National Guidance, Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Minister for Security, and Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister. She was also an accomplished author and co-founder of FEMRITE, the Uganda Women Writers’ Association.
Beyond politics and literature, Karooro was deeply involved in community projects, including plans for a reusable sanitary pad factory and a skilling centre in Bushenyi. Her contributions to education, women’s empowerment, and youth talent development have been hailed as transformative.
Bushenyi leaders say the renaming of the stadium will serve as a constant reminder of her enduring impact on the district and the region at large.
