Beneficiaries of the Emyooga sacco for fresh food vendors at Busega Market are expressing their gratitude for the initiative, citing its significant role in boosting their incomes and enhancing their capacity to supply food locally and beyond.
With net savings reaching UGX 35.8 million and 81 active members, the sacco is thriving. Mary Kasana, a sacco member and mother of five, shared her success story, earning UGX 250,000 daily from supplying food to schools. “From the Emyooga fund, I started my own business. I supply food to schools and employ seven people. Every day, I invest around UGX 500,000-700,000 and make a profit of UGX 250,000, with UGX 200,000 going into my savings,” Kasana explained.
Dirisa Ssenkungu, a young beneficiary, recounted his journey from poverty to prosperity thanks to a loan from the sacco. “I was poor and had plans to go abroad but lacked the funds. I received a loan from the sacco, which I repaid without pressure. When I finally went abroad, I earned money and returned to start my own business in this market,” Ssenkungu said.
Many sacco members proudly report building their own houses, made possible by the seed capital provided in 2021. The sacco boasts cumulative savings of UGX 82.9 million, net savings of UGX 35.8 million, cumulative loans of UGX 79.2 million, net loans of UGX 42.7 million, and member shares totaling UGX 570,000.
