Panic has gripped Uganda’s opposition circles after Eddie Mutwe, the head of security for National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, was violently abducted this afternoon in Mukono District.
According to urgent reports shared by Bobi Wine and the NUP party on X (formerly Twitter), Mutwe was seized by armed men dressed in Special Forces Command (SFC) uniforms. Witnesses said the operatives were traveling in a Toyota van locally referred to as a “drone” a vehicle infamously associated with forced disappearances.
“Comrade @eddie_mutwe has just been violently abducted from Kiwango village in Mukono district by armed men in SFC uniform traveling in a Toyota van (‘drone’),” Bobi Wine posted, along with a photo showing Mutwe wearing the party’s red beret.
NUP also confirmed the incident, adding that Mutwe’s current whereabouts remain unknown.
Eddie Mutwe, a longtime confidant and the man in charge of Bobi Wine’s personal security, has previously been arrested during political crackdowns. His proximity to Uganda’s most prominent opposition leader has often placed him in confrontation with state security forces.
As of late Saturday, authorities had not issued any official comment on the abduction. Repeated attempts to get responses from police and military spokespeople were unsuccessful.
The violent seizure of Bobi Wine’s head of security comes amid heightened concern over the re-emergence of so-called “drone” abductions a tactic widely condemned by human rights organizations as illegal and terrorizing.
This is a developing story.
