Kampala, Uganda | Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, the President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and a prominent figure in Ugandan politics, has successfully graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from Cavendish University. The pop star-turned-politician’s academic journey, spanning seven years, culminated in a moment of triumph that was not without its challenges.
Kyagulanyi’s path to this academic achievement was fraught with what he describes as deliberate attempts to derail his progress. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, he revealed the extent of the obstacles he faced in the lead-up to his graduation.
“Recently, when news broke that I was set to graduate, the usual detractors got busy, making every effort to stop me,” Kyagulanyi stated. He further alleged that individuals, possibly acting on behalf of the government, sought to block his graduation by petitioning the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).
The situation escalated when officials from the NCHE reportedly visited Cavendish University, demanding comprehensive documentation related to Kyagulanyi’s academic records. The scrutiny involved the review of his application form, admission letter, class attendance records, examination scripts, coursework submissions, and tuition payment history.
“It was only after a thorough and intense investigation that I was cleared to graduate today,” Kyagulanyi said, expressing relief. He also questioned whether any other Ugandan student had ever been subjected to such scrutiny.
While the Nile Post could not independently verify Kyagulanyi’s claims regarding the NCHE’s investigation, the institution has been contacted for comment on the matter.
Reflecting on his journey, Kyagulanyi expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support he received throughout his studies, which began in 2016 at the International University of East Africa before he transferred to Cavendish University. He credited his sister, Sylvia Kyagulanyi, NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya, and his wife, Barbie, as key supporters in his pursuit of a law degree.
“This achievement is not just mine, but it belongs to everyone who has believed in me and stood by me through thick and thin. Education is a powerful tool for change, and I am committed to using my knowledge to further the cause of justice and equality in our nation,” Kyagulanyi affirmed.
The decision by Bobi Wine to pursue legal studies has been widely seen as a strategic move to strengthen his advocacy for legal reforms and human rights in Uganda. His academic milestone comes amid his ongoing struggle against what he describes as repressive government actions aimed at silencing opposition voices.
Supporters of Bobi Wine took to social media to celebrate his accomplishment, praising his resilience and dedication. “Bobi Wine continues to be a beacon of hope and resilience. His latest accomplishment in the field of law is a testament to his unwavering commitment to fight for a better Uganda,” one supporter tweeted.
As Kyagulanyi embarks on this new chapter, there is keen interest in how he will leverage his legal education in his political and social activism. His graduation not only marks a personal victory but also serves as a powerful symbol of the importance of education in the ongoing struggle for justice and democracy in Uganda.
