In a heartwarming gesture, National Unity Platform (NUP) leader, Kyagulanyi Sentamu, alias Bobi Wine, marked Eid El-Fitr by sharing joy and appreciation with the often-overlooked street sweepers of Kampala.
Bobi Wine, accompanied by his team, distributed Eid packages to the women and men who tirelessly cleaned the city’s roads and streets.
The street sweepers, mostly elderly women, face numerous hardships, including poor pay, delayed wages, and exposure to crime and accidents. Bobi Wine’s visit brought attention to their plight, highlighting the need for better working conditions and social protection.
The NUP leader’s gesture was met with warm appreciation from the street sweepers, who were touched by the recognition and kindness. As Bobi Wine celebrated Eid with these unsung heroes, he reiterated the importance of valuing and supporting the most vulnerable members of society.
“These people, who are mostly elderly women, work amidst very tough conditions. We’ve seen them protest over poor pay which is often delayed. We’ve seen stories of how they’re often attacked by criminals or knocked by reckless drivers. We’ve seen how some of them have lost lives in floods caused by poor drainage. We decided to reach out to them to recognize and appreciate the important work they do, but also to highlight their plight.” Bobi Wine posted on X
Today, Muslims across Uganda are celebrating the Eid El-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan. The celebration follows the sighting of the new crescent moon on Saturday by morning Islamic teachings. Notably, this year’s fasting period lasted 29 days, as Islamic tradition allows for either 29 or 30 days of fasting.
