Arne Slot admits Liverpool have suffered fresh injury blows

Liverpool’s Premier League title aspirations encountered a setback as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Aston Villa at Villa Park on Wednesday. The Reds, who have experienced a series of draws recently, once again relinquished a lead in a match that saw momentum swing between both sides.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool, but Aston Villa responded with goals from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins, overturning the advantage. Trent Alexander-Arnold restored parity in the second half with a deflected effort. However, substitute Darwin Núñez squandered a prime opportunity to secure victory, missing a clear chance late in the game.

Manager Arne Slot expressed his dissatisfaction at the final whistle, acknowledging that the draw allows Arsenal an opportunity to narrow the gap in the title race. Adding to Liverpool’s concerns, Slot confirmed an injury to right-back Conor Bradley, who was substituted after approximately 20 minutes due to a suspected injury. Bradley had replaced Alexander-Arnold earlier, who was managing a recent injury, underscoring the team’s current defensive challenges.

In his post-match press conference, Slot indicated that Bradley is unlikely to be available for the upcoming fixtures against Manchester City and Newcastle United. He stated, “It is difficult but he felt a bit when he made a sprint. He tried to continue but had to go out. All the time with injuries, I always say if a player wants to go out himself, that’s not a promising sign.” Slot further added, “It will probably lead to the fact he is probably 99.9 per cent not available for City and I don’t expect him against Newcastle as well.”

This injury compounds Liverpool’s defensive issues, especially with Joe Gomez already sidelined. The team now faces the challenge of managing without their second and third-choice right-backs. Bradley has been impressive this season, notably providing a key pass that led to a significant chance for Dominik Szoboszlai. The responsibility now heavily rests on Alexander-Arnold, with Slot needing to manage his workload carefully in the forthcoming critical matches.
