The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has dismissed reports alleging civilian killings in the areas of Komanda and Eringeti in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), insisting that its operations under Operation Shujaa are being conducted jointly with the Congolese army in strict adherence to protecting civilians.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, UPDF said the misinformation misrepresented ongoing military operations against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels in eastern DRC.

“There were no killings in the areas of Komanda–Eringeti as alleged,” the statement read.
According to the army, clashes occurred in Apakwang, about 40 kilometers north of Komanda in Mambasa territory, where two UPDF soldiers were killed. The area was previously a stronghold of ADF leader Musa Baluku, which the forces say they successfully dislodged.

The UPDF added that the ADF, under sustained pressure from joint Ugandan and Congolese forces (FARDC), has resorted to reprisals in isolated and remote locations, including intimidation attacks on villages to gain publicity.
During recent operations in Chabi, joint forces engaged two enemy groups of 10–15 fighters. The UPDF reported killing three ADF combatants and recovering three guns. Pursuit missions are underway to neutralize another splinter group of 15–20 fighters around Oicha.

“The UPDF, working jointly with the FARDC, remains committed to protecting civilians, dismantling ADF terrorist networks, and ensuring lasting peace and stability in eastern DRC,” said Major General Felix Kulayigye, Director of Defence Public Information.
Operation Shujaa was launched in late 2021 as a joint military campaign between Uganda and the DRC to eliminate the ADF, a rebel group responsible for deadly attacks in both countries and linked to extremist networks.
