ANT Warns of Instability Over Attacks on Opposition Candidates

The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) has warned that continued violent attacks on opposition politicians could plunge the country into chaos and instability if not stopped.

In a statement released on Saturday, ANT’s acting national coordinator, Alice Alaso Asianut, condemned the alleged harassment and violent disruption of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi’s campaign activities in Lira, Kiruhura, and Mbarara districts.

Alaso described the conduct of security agencies as “highly detrimental” to the democratic process, saying it undermines citizens’ right to freely participate in elections. She urged the Electoral Commission to take charge and guarantee the safety of all candidates and their supporters.

“The Electoral Commission should be seen to act. It is your process. It is your mandate to ensure candidates are protected and facilitated to meet Ugandans,” Alaso stated.

She also decried the alleged humiliation and undressing of women during arrests, calling on women in leadership positions to condemn such acts.

ANT further demanded the immediate release of all persons reportedly detained or abducted during campaign activities, reaffirming its solidarity with NUP in calling for a fair and peaceful electoral process.

“The use of unidentified, armed groups to harass Ugandans must stop now,” the statement warned, adding that failure to act could endanger national stability.
