All You Need To Know About NUP’s Kawempe North candidate Nalukoola?

Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, born in 1983 to Mr. Swaib Sserugooti Kajjankemba and Ms. Madiina Nantongo in Kirokole Village, Kawempe I Parish, is a distinguished Ugandan lawyer and politician. His educational journey began at Kawempe Islamic Seminary, Kyerima Umea Primary School, and Kawempe Muslim Primary School. In 1998, he enrolled at St. Paul Secondary School in Mpererwe for his secondary education but had to discontinue in Senior Two due to financial constraints, leading him to seek employment in Kampala.

In 2001, demonstrating resilience, Nalukoola resumed his studies at Nile Secondary School (now Kinaawa High School), completing his O-Level with a First Grade. He then attended Kawempe Muslim Secondary School for his A-Level studies in 2003, where he was elected head prefect. His academic excellence was evident when he achieved four A’s and a distinction in General Paper in 2004, inspiring him to pursue a career in law.

In 2005, Nalukoola joined Makerere University to study law, graduating in 2010. During his time there, he was an active resident of Livingston Hall and served as the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs in the students’ guild parliament. Although he contested for the guild presidency in 2008, he was not successful. Concurrently, from 2006 to 2011, he served as a youth councillor and deputy speaker for Kawempe Division. He later obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre.

Professionally, Nalukoola began his legal career at Ochieng, Harimwomugasho & Company Advocates, followed by a tenure at Mayanja, Nakibuule & Company Advocates. In 2016, he founded Nalukoola Advocates & Solicitors, a law firm dedicated to promoting constitutionalism, the rule of law, and human rights. His practice focuses on human rights and constitutional law, and he is known for his relentless approach to exploring all legal avenues for his clients.

Politically, Nalukoola was a longstanding member of the Democratic Party (DP) and served as its national legal adviser. However, in 2023, he resigned from this position, expressing discontent over the party’s cooperation agreement with President Museveni, which he felt was made without adequate consultation with DP members. In February 2025, the National Unity Platform (NUP) announced Nalukoola as its flag bearer for the upcoming Kawempe North Constituency by-election, scheduled for March 13, 2025. He secured this nomination by obtaining 71% of the votes in a competitive selection process involving ten aspirants.

Throughout his career, Nalukoola has been involved in significant legal challenges, including contesting the 2017 amendment of Uganda’s 1995 Constitution (Article 102b) that sought to remove the presidential age limit. His commitment to justice and human rights continues to influence his contributions to Uganda’s legal and political landscapes.
