Alex Luswa Luwemba is reportedly making urgent appeals for reconciliation with National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine. Sources indicate that Luwemba has dispatched emissaries to seek an audience with the opposition leader in an effort to mend relations following his fallout with the party.
Earlier this year, Luwemba lost the NUP party ticket to Elias Nalukoola but chose to contest as an independent candidate in defiance of Bobi Wine’s directive to rally behind the official NUP flag bearer. His decision was widely seen as a betrayal of party unity, prompting backlash from NUP loyalists.
It is alleged that Luwemba’s independent bid was influenced by Mathias Mpuuga, a known political rival of Bobi Wine, and the family of the late Muhammad Ssegirinya, who reportedly maintain a vested interest in the Kawempe North constituency.
However, in a recent statement, Luwemba defended his actions, insisting that his candidacy was not meant to undermine NUP but rather to challenge the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and safeguard NUP’s votes.
“I didn’t enter the race to fight NUP; I was there to challenge the NRM and to protect our party’s votes. In fact, I personally reached out to my president [Bobi Wine], and he appreciated the maturity in my politics. I have since extended efforts to meet him and formally reconcile,” Luwemba stated.
Reports further suggest that Luwemba is not only seeking forgiveness but also positioning himself to rejoin NUP ahead of the 2026 general elections. Sources close to the politician indicate that he intends to use the party as his political platform to contest for the mayoral seat, marking a significant shift in his political ambitions.
As discussions continue behind closed doors, it remains to be seen whether NUP leadership will welcome Luwemba back into the party ranks or if his past defiance will hinder his political reintegration.
