Agago Teacher Arrested For Alleged Defilement, Police Foil Mob Attack

Police in Agago District have arrested a primary school teacher over allegations of aggravated defilement, following an incident that sparked outrage and an attempted mob justice in Geregere Sub-county.

The suspect, a 30-year-old teacher at Latinling Primary School, was found at his residence with a 15-year-old girl, reportedly one of his pupils. The incident occurred on Thursday while the girl’s parents were away attending a community event.

Word of the alleged incident quickly spread through the village, prompting residents to surround the teacher’s house, allegedly with intent to harm him. However, quick intervention by sub-county leaders and police helped prevent violence and led to the teacher’s arrest.

Authorities say the suspect claimed he developed a relationship with the girl following personal difficulties at home.

Susan Akot Moro, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Agago, condemned the incident and warned against attempts to settle capital offences such as defilement out of court. She urged community members to protect children and report abuses to lawful authorities.

“I spoke directly to the suspect, and he admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with the minor,” Akot said.

Paska Adong, the District Community Development Officer in charge of gender and culture, criticized the growing parental neglect in the area, especially during busy farming and festive seasons.

“Many parents leave their children unattended, especially between October and March, and that’s when such abuses often occur,” Adong noted.

Police say investigations are ongoing, and the suspect remains in custody as the case is prepared for prosecution. Authorities have also urged parents to be more vigilant and involved in their children’s welfare to prevent such incidents in the future.
