Kizza Besigye To Appear In Court Today

Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao has confirmed that Dr. Kizza Besigye will appear before a civilian court today, where judges will determine the next steps in his case.

This development follows increasing concerns over Besigye’s health, which has worsened due to a seven-day hunger strike, during which he has only consumed water. Medical professionals attending to him have expressed alarm, stating that administering medication under such conditions poses significant risks.

“His health has deteriorated, and the medical doctors are hesitant to administer treatment since he is not eating,” Minister Mao stated.

Mao also criticized Besigye’s legal team for allegedly failing to secure a Supreme Court decree and instead politicizing the matter. His comments sparked heated reactions in Parliament, prompting Speaker Anita Among to suspend the session for a closed-door meeting with ministers and opposition members.

After the meeting, Speaker Among directed the relevant ministers to closely monitor Besigye’s condition and report back to Parliament by 4 PM. Upon reconvening, Minister Mao reiterated that Besigye’s case would be handled in court, emphasizing that the final decision rests with the judges.

“We will present him to the civilian court, and it will be upon the judges to decide the next course of action,” he affirmed.
