UPC Unveils Plans for 2026 Elections, Calls for Inclusive Politics

In a bid to strengthen the party’s grassroots and promote inclusive politics, Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) Party President Jimmy Akena has announced plans to amend the party constitution to allow all members to elect the party president. This move aims to increase participation and transparency within the party ahead of the 2026 general elections.

This announcement was made as he delivered his end-of-year message at the party headquarters in Kampala.

Akena’s proposal to amend the party constitution is expected to be tabled at the next UPC Delegates Conference.
Speaking at a press conference at the party headquarters, Akena outlined the party’s preparations for the upcoming elections, which include continuous membership registration, renewal of political leadership at all levels, and the selection of party flag bearers.

He emphasized the importance of involving all party members in determining the party’s future.

He said, “This great idea is being brought with the understanding that all members should participate in electing their leader.”

Akena also expressed concern about the commercialization of politics, which he believes has made election activities unsustainable and exclusive.

He warned that this could lead to a widening gap between the haves and have-nots, potentially destabilizing the country’s political, social, and economic landscape.

The UPC party president’s call for inclusive politics comes as the party prepares to contest the 2026 general elections. Akena has already declared his presidential bid, vowing to revitalize the party and promote a more inclusive and participatory approach to politics.

If adopted, it could mark a significant shift in the party’s internal dynamics and potentially set a precedent for other political parties in Uganda.
