In a significant move to boost Uganda’s agricultural sector, Vice President Jessica Alupo handed over tractors to cooperatives under the Local Economic Growth Support (LEGS) Program at the Microfinance Support Centre
The event marked a major milestone in the government’s efforts to empower farmers, modernize agriculture, and achieve Uganda’s Vision 2040.
The LEGS Program aims to address the challenges faced by the agricultural sector, including limited access to modern technology, inadequate financing, and subsistence farming practices.
“Agriculture remains the backbone of Uganda’s economy, providing livelihoods for over 70% of our population and contributing significantly to our GDP. However, the full potential of this sector remains untapped due to challenges such as limited access to modern technology, inadequate financing, and the predominance of subsistence farming practices.” Alupo Said
The Vice President commended the Microfinance Support Centre (MSC) for its commitment to championing the government’s efforts to uplift the lives of the economically active poor.
She also praised MSC’s leadership for their dedication to ensuring affordable financial credit facilities and promoting mass wealth creation initiatives.
She said “I also want to single out and commend MSC Leadership. Under your stewardship, MSC has remained a reliable partner in delivering government programs and has grown into a beacon of hope for many Ugandans. Your dedication to ensuring affordable financial credit facilities and championing mass wealth creation initiatives, such as the Presidential Initiative on Wealth and Job Creation (Emyooga), is truly commendable. Rest assured, we will continue to support you as you work tirelessly to achieve the government’s mandate.”
The distribution of tractors to cooperatives is expected to enhance productivity, reduce drudgery, and accelerate the transition from subsistence to commercial farming. The Vice President urged the recipients to view the tractors as instruments of wealth creation, using them to provide jobs, increase household incomes, and transition into the money economy.
The success of programs like LEGS depends on strong partnerships and dedication. The Vice President thanked all stakeholders, including MSC, government ministries, development partners, and cooperatives, for their contributions to the initiative.
The handover of tractors to cooperatives marks the beginning of a new chapter of growth and success for Uganda’s agricultural sector.
