UN Women To Hold An Expo On The Sidelines Of NAM Summit

The UN Women is set to hold a side event on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Munyonyo aimed at leveraging resources from public and private sources to unlock investment opportunities for women-led businesses

This planned event is dubbed the source of the Nile Women in Agribusiness Expo and is scheduled to run from the 14th to the 16th of January 2024

According to the available data by UBOS 6 of every 10 Ugandan women work in agri-related businesses,  9 of 10 work as cultivators, and not in value addition activities like processing among others.

Dr Paulina Chiwangu the UN women’s representative says they aim to build on existing projects to empower women to be more active in agro-processing and export value chains. Additionally, she says the NAM and Chaina Summits will shed light on women’s role in promoting tourism.

She also says the upcoming two summits will provide a platform for women in entrepreneurship to network with corporate representatives who will unlock opportunities globally.

Dr. Ann Rose Okurut commissioner in charge of animal health in the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries represents the minister for labor Betty Amongi noted that the two forthcoming summits require bold action both in policy and investment levels to increase the number of women in Agribusiness.

The source of the Nile Women in Agribusiness Expo according to Chiwangu targets different categories of women in communities namely women living with AIDS, women migrants, refugees, and survivors of GVB among others.
