In a directive issued to telecom operators, UCC instructed providers to implement the shutdown within the stipulated timeframe and ensure full compliance across their networks.
According to the directive, the suspension applies to internet services and data transmission, and operators are required to take immediate steps to execute the order as communicated by the regulator.
The commission cited its mandate under the Uganda Communications Act and reminded operators that adherence to regulatory directives is a condition of their licences.
UCC further cautioned that failure to comply with the directive will attract sanctions in line with the law and the terms governing telecommunications and internet service provision.
The directive was issued as the country approaches polling, following the official closure of campaign activities earlier in the day.
UCC did not specify the duration of the shutdown in the directive but emphasized that operators must maintain coordination with the commission and other relevant authorities during the implementation period.
Telecommunications companies have been instructed to acknowledge receipt of the directive and ensure operational readiness to carry out the shutdown as ordered.
