The directive follows a regional threat assessment conducted ahead of polling for the President and Members of Parliament.
According to police spokesperson for Wamala region SSP Lameck Kigozi, the measure is aimed at preventing the misuse of flammable substances at a time of increased political tension among supporters of rival candidates.
“As polling day approaches, security has directed all dealers in petroleum products to halt the sale of fuel to persons carrying bottles, jerrycans, or any suspicious containers,” said SSP Lameck Kigozi.
He said the decision was taken after security agencies assessed the potential danger posed by easy access to fuel, warning that such products could be abused by ill-intentioned individuals to disrupt public order or endanger lives.
Drivers, boda boda riders, and other legitimate fuel users have been advised to refuel their vehicles and motorcycles using appropriate and standard means, directly at fuel pumps.
Security has also discouraged parking at fuel stations, both during the day and at night, as part of broader measures to reduce vulnerabilities around sensitive installations.
“This directive is intended to curtail the abuse of dangerous substances and enhance public safety during the electoral period,” SSP Kigozi said.
He called on fuel station operators to comply fully with the directive and urged the public to cooperate with security agencies as the country prepares for polling.
Security agencies in the region said enforcement of the directive will be firm, warning that non-compliant dealers and individuals risk facing legal action under existing laws governing public safety and electoral security.
