In a directive issued ahead of the January 15 general elections, UCC reminded media houses, online publishers, and administrators of digital platforms that the declaration of election results is the sole mandate of the Electoral Commission under the law.
The Commission cautioned that no individual, media outlet, or organisation is permitted to declare, publish, or broadcast election results before they are officially released by the EC through its authorised channels.
According to UCC, the directive applies to all forms of communication, including radio, television, print media, online platforms, and social media. The regulator said the move is intended to prevent misinformation, confusion, and possible public disorder during the electoral process.
UCC further reminded broadcasters of their obligations under the Uganda Communications Act and related regulations to ensure accuracy, impartiality, and compliance with electoral laws, particularly during polling, tallying, and announcement of results.
The Commission warned that any breach of the directive will attract sanctions as provided for under the law, adding that enforcement agencies will take action against individuals or entities found to be in violation.
The directive comes as political parties, candidates, and voters prepare for polling day, with UCC urging media practitioners and platform users to act responsibly in order to safeguard a peaceful, credible, and transparent electoral process.
