Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi has appealed to voters in Budaka District to support his bid for the presidency, arguing that four decades of National Resistance Movement (NRM) rule have failed to address the economic hardships facing ordinary Ugandans.

Speaking to residents in Naboa, Budaka District, Mafabi said Ugandans are overwhelmed by heavy taxation, rising living costs and declining public services, conditions he blamed on prolonged NRM governance under President Yoweri Museveni.
Mafabi told supporters that many families struggle daily to afford basic necessities, including food, due to taxes imposed on nearly every commodity. He said the situation was unacceptable and called for a change in leadership.
He dismissed calls by some supporters of the ruling party for President Museveni to remain in power, questioning how continued leadership could be justified amid widespread poverty and hardship.
“Forty years in power is enough. Nothing new can be added,” Mafabi said, arguing that even President Museveni benefited from past governments that prioritised public welfare and education.
The FDC flag bearer cited his own background, saying he attended poor schools before joining Busoga College Mwiri, attributing his educational progress to a government that invested in its citizens. He added that Museveni himself would not have attained an education without similar state support, given his humble background.
Mafabi also criticised disparities in the education sector, referencing recent teachers’ strikes and questioning why national examinations are uniform despite differences in pay and welfare between government and private school teachers.
He pledged that, if elected, his administration would ensure equal pay for all teachers, provide meals for learners at school, and improve working conditions across the education sector.
Among his key pledges, Mafabi promised better salaries for teachers and health workers, government-provided housing, and free education for their children from primary to university level.
“I am asking for a job from you so that I can work for the whole of Uganda,” Mafabi told the crowd, calling on voters to entrust him with leadership to address inequality, poor service delivery and economic hardship.
Mafabi is traversing eastern Uganda as part of his nationwide campaign ahead of the 2026 general elections.
