According to a statement issued on December 28 by the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson, SSP Lameck Kigozi, the incident occurred at about 3:30 pm at a farm where several casual labourers were residing in makeshift shelters.
Police say the suspect, identified only as John, suddenly became violent, armed himself with a panga, and attacked a fellow labourer, Nsubuga John. The suspect allegedly cut down Nsubuga’s shelter and attempted to strike him on the head. Nsubuga escaped after sustaining a deep cut on his arm while shielding himself.
The suspect later turned his aggression toward Nakanjako Ruth, who fled her shelter in fear, leaving behind her daughter. Police state that the suspect dragged the child into a nearby maize plantation, where she was sexually assaulted and later strangled to death.
The child’s body was recovered mid-morning the following day and was taken to Kiboga Hospital for postmortem examination.
Preliminary police findings indicate that the suspect is a known marijuana user and is believed to have been under the influence of the drug at the time of the attack.
Investigations further reveal that the suspect had previously attempted to pursue a relationship with the child’s mother but was rejected in favour of Nsubuga John. Police believe the suspect initially intended to kill Nsubuga, and when both adults escaped, he redirected his violence toward the child.
The suspect remains at large and is considered dangerous.
Police have appealed to members of the public with information that may lead to his arrest to report immediately to the nearest police station.
