Police said the passenger train was traveling from Kampala towards Mukono when it collided with a Mitsubishi Pajero, registration number UBF 582X, which was coming from the Luzira side heading towards Kampala.
Following the impact, the train reportedly pushed the vehicle approximately 200 metres off the road.
The motor vehicle was carrying four occupants identified as Gardener Mathew, a male adult; Savana Gardener, a female adult; and two children. All the occupants are United States citizens working with an NGO known as Baptism Mission in Uganda.
The victims were rushed to Rubis Hospital along the Lugogo Bypass for medical treatment. However, Savana Gardener, who was the co-driver, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The condition of the other occupants was not immediately disclosed.
Preliminary police findings indicate that the crash may have been caused by careless driving and failure to comply with hand signals issued by a Railway Police officer who was on duty at the crossing at the time. Police cautioned that the findings are preliminary and subject to confirmation upon completion of investigations.
The scene was visited and documented by Railway Police officers, and statements are being recorded from relevant witnesses.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing, and police said the public will be informed as more details become available.
The Uganda Police Force conveyed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and wished a quick recovery to those injured.
