Salim Jamal Backs Youthful Uganda Side To Shine At AFCON

Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Salim Jamal has said the national team is entering the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a renewed sense of purpose, driven by a talented new generation of players and an improving competitive environment within the squad.

Jamal, one of the most experienced members of the team, noted that the current camp setup in Morocco has created a sharper, more focused group compared to previous qualification cycles.

“What I am seeing here is a different atmosphere,” he said. “We have a clear task, and the players are determined to push beyond what we achieved in 2019. Everyone is motivated to contribute to the nation.”

With Uganda undergoing a generational shift, Jamal emphasized the crucial role of mentorship and the need to stimulate confidence in emerging players. He described his leadership as both on-field and psychological, aimed at maintaining cohesion.

“I am here to push everyone, to guide the young ones, and to bring energy into the team. Our duty is to make the nation proud,” he said.

He highlighted that the latest crop of players entering the Cranes setup is better prepared, thanks to stronger domestic competitions and exposure to higher-level football.

“Today’s young players come in with experience from league action and regular competition. Unlike earlier years when only mature players could handle the pressure, we now have young players who can start games and perform at high levels,” he noted.

Jamal said their presence reflects a global shift in football, where youth increasingly carry national teams. He urged the country to rally behind this transition.

“These talented young players must be supported and motivated. With the right belief, they can deliver and help make the nation great,” he added.

The Cranes continue to fine-tune their preparations in Morocco ahead of two buildup fixtures: against AS FAR Rabat on 13 December 2025 and against Gabon on 17 December 2025. The matches are expected to provide a crucial test of the squad’s depth and readiness, with AS FAR currently competing in the CAF Champions League.
