Museveni Urges Bundibugyo Leaders to Prioritise Unity, Service Over Politics

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has cautioned leaders in Bundibugyo District against divisive politics, urging them instead to focus on unity, accountability, and service delivery.

Speaking to thousands of supporters, Museveni noted that residents’ proximity to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) gives them firsthand appreciation of the value of peace. He reflected on the suffering endured by Congolese communities and reminded the audience that Uganda once faced similar turmoil before the National Resistance Movement (NRM) restored stability.

“You people who live along the country’s borders know the true meaning of peace,” Museveni said. “Many people across the border have died, property destroyed, and time wasted. Uganda was once like the DRC, but when the NRM took leadership, we stabilized the country.”

The President highlighted the NRM government’s contributions to peace and development, citing investments in both economic and social infrastructure. He recounted the early struggle to develop road networks, including how Uganda bartered sorghum with Yugoslavia to build the Kampala–Mubende road, later extended to Fort Portal, Bundibugyo, and Lamia. Museveni pledged that the dilapidated Fort Portal–Bundibugyo road will soon be repaired.

On education and health, Museveni said Bundibugyo now has 107 government primary schools and 12 secondary schools, part of a national plan to provide a primary school in every parish and a secondary school in every sub-county. He also promised renovations to local government health facilities and stressed the importance of preventive healthcare. The President credited such measures with eradicating polio and measles and contributing to the district’s population growth from around 50,000 to nearly 300,000.

However, Museveni expressed concern over the theft of medicines in health facilities, urging residents to hold leaders accountable and reject those motivated by tribalism or personal gain. “Stop mixing politics with tribes and religion,” he said. “Vote for leaders who protect public interests. If leaders steal your medicines, question them. Report them.”

Museveni also encouraged residents to embrace the four-acre model introduced in 1996 to support smallholder farmers in growing both food and commercial crops. He emphasized that while wealth belongs to individuals, jobs are created through productive economic activities fostered by government support.

The President concluded by urging leaders to unite their communities, protect public resources, and maximise Bundibugyo’s potential, reinforcing the NRM’s focus on peace, development, and economic transformation.
