The suspect, identified as Richard Agumaniiwe, a resident of Katojo Cell in Mbarara City South Division, was arrested on Monday following the incident at the Kikona–Ruti Town Road junction along the Mbarara–Kabale highway.
According to preliminary police findings, the incident occurred at around 4:00 pm as SP Ocaya Kennedy, the Officer in Charge of Mbarara City South Division, was clearing traffic ahead of the President’s movement from Rwampara District to Mbarara City for his second campaign rally of the day.
Police say Agumaniiwe, who was riding a Yamaha motorcycle registration number UAC 177Z, was ordered to stop and give way to the approaching presidential convoy. He allegedly ignored multiple directives, accelerated instead, and intentionally rammed into SP Ocaya, injuring him.
The officer was rushed for medical attention, while Agumaniiwe was immediately apprehended by security personnel.
Police have described the act as deliberate and dangerous, warning motorists and boda riders against defying security instructions during presidential movements. Investigations are ongoing, and charges of attempted murder are expected to be preferred against the suspect.
Authorities said further details will be released after the suspect is processed.
