By A campaign event in Iganga District turned deadly on Friday after clashes between security forces and supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) left at least one person dead and several others critically injured.
Police confirmed the death of an adult male identified as Misaki Okello, saying he was killed as officers dispersed what they described as “unruly crowds” that allegedly attacked security personnel with stones. The Uganda Police Force said its officers had come under assault while enforcing public order after the NUP presidential candidate concluded his campaign activities.

However, NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi offered a sharply different account, accusing police and the military of “firing live bullets at peaceful supporters” as they returned home after the rally.
Kyagulanyi further alleged that security personnel removed two additional bodies from the scene claims the party says it is still verifying. He also named three supporters who sustained severe injuries and are fighting for their lives in the hospital: Nuwamanya Samuel (24), Naminya Banuli (44), and Faima Namusobya (24).
The police statement did not confirm additional fatalities but noted that several suspects connected to the violence had been arrested.
The conflicting narratives have intensified concerns over the safety of campaign activities as the country heads deeper into the election season, with opposition leaders accusing security agencies of brutality and the police insisting they are responding to provocation.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident is ongoing.
