By The Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) has completed construction of a new female inmates’ ward at Luzira Women Prison, a major step toward easing congestion and improving conditions for women in custody.
The one-storey facility, now awaiting commissioning, can accommodate up to 350 inmates and is equipped with modern, gender-appropriate amenities. The ward features upgraded sanitary installations, ample ventilation, spacious circulation areas and neatly arranged bed units designed to improve comfort and order.

Officials say the facility also includes private bathing areas, dedicated washing spaces, internal storage units and lighting systems tailored specifically for female inmates aligning with international standards for humane treatment.
UPS says the development reflects its commitment to the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, which call for dignity, safety and gender-sensitive accommodation.
Built by the Prisons Engineering Gang using locally sourced materials, the project is part of the low-cost housing strategy implemented by the Commissioner General of Prisons, following directives from President Yoweri Museveni. The approach emphasizes self-reliance, cost savings and use of internal technical capacity across the service.
The completion of the new ward adds to a series of infrastructural projects undertaken by the Prisons Service over the past five years, aimed at reducing congestion and enhancing welfare and operational efficiency in prisons nationwide.
