Former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi on Wednesday openly backed President Yoweri Museveni’s re-election bid, calling him “the best leader” as the President launched a new loan scheme for large-scale farmers in Kanungu District.
Speaking at the rally at Rwere Playground, Mbabazi said he had worked with Museveni through “mountains and valleys” and witnessed the country’s transformation under his leadership.

“I’m one of those who started this party,” he said. “Mr Museveni has led us through difficult times to where we are now. He is the best leader.”
Mbabazi also delivered a message from former Premier Ruhakana Rugunda, who similarly endorsed Museveni as “the best candidate.”
President Museveni used the rally to announce a fertilizer loan scheme for tea, coffee and cocoa farmers. The funds will be accessed through SACCOs and repaid after harvest.
“This will help large-scale farmers buy fertilizers and return the money once they sell,” Museveni said.
He told residents that peace remained one of the NRM’s greatest achievements, especially for border districts like Kanungu. He also pointed to ongoing upgrades on the Ntungamo–Rukungiri–Kanungu–Ishasha road and plans to elevate several other routes in the region.
Museveni urged locals to focus on household income rather than relying solely on new infrastructure. He reminded smallholders of the four-acre model and revisited the early days of tea growing, saying he introduced the crop alongside Amama and Jackie Mbabazi.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among said 140 million Euros had been secured for a key regional road project and praised Museveni for investing Shs310 million in Kanungu’s tea sector. She added that the district’s border location made continued peace especially vital.
