Opposition presidential contender Nathan Nandala Mafabi has placed Acholi compensation at the centre of his campaign message, telling voters in Gulu District that an FDC-led government would prioritise restoring the region’s lost cattle, land, and livelihoods.
Speaking during rallies in Cwero Centre, Paicho Subcounty, and Patiko Subcounty on Wednesday, Mafabi said Acholi had endured decades of economic loss and political betrayal, especially over unfulfilled compensation pledges.
“We come with a plan to make Acholi shine again,” Mafabi told cheering supporters. “You used to have everything including your proud short-horned cattle. We are the only ones with a clear plan to compensate you for your land, cows, and life.”

Mafabi criticised government officials who repeatedly promise compensation during election seasons but never deliver.
“If they were serious, they would give you the money instead of lying to you every five years,” he said. “Acholi deserves justice, not empty political promises.”
To rebuild the region’s economy, Mafabi pledged to revive the Acholi Cooperative Union, which once anchored northern Uganda’s agricultural trade before decades of conflict and mismanagement led to its collapse.
He said his government would also re-establish the Cooperative and Agricultural Bank, allowing farmers to access loans at zero interest.
“Whatever you grow will be bought because government will lead the marketing. We are bringing back the systems that once made Acholi prosperous,” he said.
Mafabi accused the current government of ignoring Acholi’s compensation demands while presiding over what he called massive national corruption.
He claimed that up to UGX 10 trillion is lost annually to graft—money he says could fund compensation, roads, hospitals, and schools.
“Give us your vote so we can stop the theft and give Acholi what is rightfully theirs,” he remarked. “In forty years, if they were serious about your suffering, every village road in Acholi would be tarmacked.”
Mafabi urged Acholi residents to lend him their votes, promising that compensation and restoration would begin immediately under his government.
“We know your pain. We know your loss. Give us the opportunity to serve you as your servants and we shall return dignity to Acholi,” he said.
