Uganda’s 2025 UACE exams kicked off today, Monday 10 November, with more than 166,400 Senior Six candidates across the country sitting their papers under tight security.
Among them, 70 prisoners, 66 males and four females have begun their exams, Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine confirmed. “This marks an important milestone as our inmates join other candidates nationwide,” he said.

Uganda Prisons Service holds 42,193 convicts, 36,134 remand prisoners, and 632 debtors, totaling 78,900 inmates. Additionally, 959 children live with their mothers in Prison 303, spread across 269 prisons in 19 regions and managed by 14,925 staff.
Baine added that PLE and Uganda Certificate of Education exams were successfully conducted in prisons earlier this year, praising all who supported candidates.
UNEB has emphasised strict security and exam integrity, noting a 14.6 % increase in the 2025 UACE candidature compared to last year. The Prisons Service says academic programs are crucial for equipping inmates with skills for reintegration.
