“I have learnt with sadness about the tragic accident that occurred this morning along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, claiming many lives. I extend my condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a quick recovery. I have directed the State House Comptroller to give Shs 5m to each bereaved family and Shs 1m to the injured,” Museveni stated.
He urged road users to exercise utmost caution to prevent further tragedies, describing the accident as a painful reminder of the need for discipline on Uganda’s roads.
The crash occurred at around 12:15 a.m. at Kitaleeba Village near Asili Farm and involved two buses, a lorry, and a Toyota Surf. Police confirmed that the accident happened when the two buses attempted to overtake simultaneously, resulting in a head-on collision and a chain reaction involving other vehicles.
The injured were rushed to Kiryandongo Hospital and nearby medical centres, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the same hospital mortuary for post-mortem and identification.
Police continue to caution motorists against reckless overtaking, one of the leading causes of fatal accidents on Ugandan roads.
