NUP Picks Florence Asio To Face Anita Among for Bukedea Woman MP Seat After Rival Disqualifications

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially announced Florence Asio as its flag-bearer for the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament seat in the upcoming 2026 general election, replacing Mercy Marion Alupo. The move follows a controversial decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) and the High Court to remove Alupo, along with two other challengers, from the national voters’ register.

Minister Mutuuzo Decries Backlash Against Women’s Political Participation

Party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu popularly known as “Bobi Wine” condemned the disqualifications as an orchestrated attempt to silence women’s voices in Bukedea.

“The revolution is not just men’s business. When you suppress women from participating, you derail half the country’s future,” Kyagulanyi said in a statement.

In May 2025, parish tribunals in Bukedea recommended the deletion of the names of Alupo (NUP), Norma Susan Otai (FDC) and Hellen Akol Odeke (Independent) from the national voters’ roll, citing their alleged ineligibility as registered voters in Bukedea District.

An objection filed by a local voter, Zipporah Akol, challenged their nominations under Cause Number 0198 of 2025 before the Kampala High Court. The EC, through an affidavit, confirmed it upheld the tribunals’ decisions given that no contrary evidence was submitted during review.

Otai has accused the EC of bias and said the process was politically motivated to prevent credible challengers from running against the incumbent Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among.
