Only Two Aspirants Meet Nomination Support Threshold – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has revealed that only two out of 27 presidential aspirants have so far met the legal threshold of supporters required for nomination ahead of next week’s presidential nominations.

In a statement issued on 20th September 2025, EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said that by Friday, 19th September, the Commission had notified 27 of the 38 aspirants who submitted lists of supporters endorsing their presidential bids.

“Out of the 27, two aspirants had met the required supporter numbers, while the others were at various levels of compliance,” Mucunguzi said. He added that the verification of the remaining aspirants’ lists is ongoing, and they will be notified in due course.

The law requires every presidential aspirant to present at least 100 registered voters from a minimum of two-thirds of all districts in Uganda. With 98 districts in the country, this translates to a minimum of 9,800 verified supporters for each aspirant.

According to Section 10 of the Presidential Elections Act, a voter may not subscribe to more than one nomination paper, and contravention of this rule attracts a penalty of up to UGX 480,000 or one year in prison, or both.

Mucunguzi stressed that the elaborate verification exercise is crucial to ensuring compliance with electoral laws and maintaining the integrity of the process.

The Commission reminded all aspirants that nominations for presidential candidates will take place on 23rd and 24th September 2025 at its new headquarters in Lweza-Lubowa, Makindye Ssabagabo.
