UPDF Commanders Map Out Security Strategy Ahead of 2026 Elections

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has pledged to guarantee peace and stability as the country heads toward the 2026 general elections, following a high-level security meeting chaired by Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba on Wednesday.

The meeting, held at the Special Forces Command (SFC) headquarters in Entebbe, brought together top brass of the army, including the Deputy CDF, service chiefs, division commanders, and chiefs of staff. Discussions centered on domestic security, the state of Uganda’s international military missions, and the force’s operational readiness during the election period.

Officials said commanders reviewed recent security developments inside Uganda, including counterterrorism efforts after sporadic bomb attacks linked to Islamic State-affiliated cells, as well as the threat posed by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) insurgents across the border in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Ugandan forces have been engaged in joint operations with Congolese troops since 2021 to dismantle the rebel group’s bases.

Beyond its borders, Uganda continues to play a major role in regional peacekeeping. The UPDF maintains a significant presence in Somalia under the African Union Transition Mission (ATMIS), contributes troops to peace efforts in South Sudan, and supports stability operations in the Central African Republic.

The commanders also examined Uganda’s election security framework. For years, the UPDF has complemented the Uganda Police Force in providing security during campaigns and polling. While the army’s involvement has often attracted criticism from the opposition, the military leadership insists its priority remains maintaining a peaceful and stable environment.

Since taking over as CDF in March 2024, Gen. Muhoozi has repeatedly emphasized the modernization of the UPDF, boosting readiness, and strengthening Uganda’s regional influence. Wednesday’s meeting reaffirmed that commitment, with the army leadership vowing to remain alert and proactive as political activities intensify.

“The UPDF stands ready to secure Uganda’s peace, defend its citizens, and continue supporting regional stability,” a senior officer told reporters after the session.
